Gregory Darrall is a proud progressive, lifelong educator, and labor leader who is running to put people first. A political newcomer with more than 20 years in the classroom, Gregory currently serves as a Vice President of the Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, where he has been on the front lines fighting for educators, students, and working families.
A firm believer in the power of collective action, Gregory played a key role in the successful unionization of Fairfax County Public Schools and helped secure the district’s first Collective Bargaining Agreement in more than 50 years—an organizing victory he considers the most meaningful of his career. As an educator, Gregory has served students across the full spectrum, from advanced academics to newly arrived immigrant students as an ESOL teacher, and he now works as a Special Educator. Public education is not just his profession—it is his passion and his lifelong commitment.
Gregory believes healthcare is a fundamental human right. Through his union leadership, he helped negotiate healthcare improvements that lowered copays and made care more affordable for educational workers and their families. In office, Gregory will fight to strengthen Virginia’s healthcare marketplace and expand existing programs so that every Virginian can access high-quality, affordable coverage.
Beyond education and healthcare, Gregory is a steadfast advocate for social and economic justice, worker, immigrant, and women’s rights, and bold action to combat climate change through investments in clean, green energy. He is a proud member and staunch supporter of the LGBTQIA+ community.
Born in Buffalo, New York to a working class family, Gregory met his husband, José, while living in Miami. He holds two master’s degrees in Teaching ESOL and Educational Leadership. Together, Gregory and José built their own version of the American Dream, owning and operating a small business in South Florida for a decade. José is a first-generation Venezuelan American, giving them firsthand insight into the challenges faced by immigrant families. The couple have called Alexandria home since 2015 and are deeply committed to making the city work for everyone.
Gregory is an active teacher with daily classroom responsibilities. He is fluent in Spanish, loves walking Alexandria’s neighborhoods, and is driven by a deep belief in fairness, equality, and strengthening our democracy from the ground up. This campaign isn’t about one person—it’s about all of us. Gregory Darrall is running because he believes people always come first, and that together we are stronger.
